Sleeps Just Beyond
Adelbert D. Barnes Hears and Answers the Call of Death
A. D. Barnes, for many years a citizen of LaPorte and a native of LaPorte county, passed to his final reward at the family home on Perry street yesterday afternoon, death following a long period of illness. The departure of Mr. Barnes marks the closing of the family name. The father, Ira L. Barnes, died some two or three years ago at an advanced age. A brother A. O. Barnes, died at Michigan City last February, following a stroke of paralysis.
Adelbert D. Barnes was born in Galena township July 28, 1849. He came to LaPorte June 12, 1871, and since that time had made this city his home. He was married to Miss Clara Spurlock and to this union there was born one son, Leigh Barnes, now a resident of Park Manor, Chicago, where he is connected with a prominent manufacture of that place as an electrician. Three grandchildren, Lotus, Lynus, and Leutrelle, remain to hold this good man as a memory of their childhood years. For many years Mr. Barnes had carried on a real estate and insurance business and since the erection of the Dick Building had been an office partner of Attorney Fred R. Liddell. He was well known and had a splendid knowledge of values, being often engaged in assisting the county assessor. He was a member of the Court of Honor and held at his death the position of recorder of the Order of Home Defenders.
The last illness of Mr. Barnes dates from about the time of election last November. Although he transacted some business after that date, it was apparent to his friends that he was losing his health, and for some weeks past he had been confined to his home. His last moments were unusually peaceful, his death being a drifting over the bar in quiet sleep. The sympathy of a large circle of friends is awakened for those who are left, especially his devoted wife.
The years pass swiftly. Their ceaseless round which speak the springtime and growth also bear the tokens of autumn and death. The green of May and the sere leaf of November are but figures on the dial of time. Within the breast of each good man there is the perennial spring of a lofty hope. Such was the experience of A. D. Barnes whom scores counted as a friend, and whose life was one which made every trust committed to his care a sacred obligation of honor.
The funeral services will be held at the residence tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock. The Rev. G. F. Craig, pastor of the Methodist church, will officiate.
